The Portugal Open Golf Tournament ( a.k.a. the Open de Portugal)
has been a regular fixture on the PGA's European Tour calendar since
1973. It is played each year in the Spring and, as such, is one of
the first events of the European Tour. The Portugal Open regularly
attracts some of the biggest names in golf and has been played in
Estoril in recent years, except when, in 2006, it took place in
Portugal's Algarve. In 2009 the Portugal Golf Federation
commemorated its 60 years of existence by allowing fans free
admission to the Portugal Open Golf Tournament held at Oitavos Dunes
golf course in Portugal. The Portugal Open Golf Tournament was won
in 2009 by Michael Hoey (Northern ireland) after a nail biting 3
hole playoff against Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano of Spain. The
Portugal Open Golf Tournament is Hoey's first major European golf
title.
